Celebrating a Variety of National Days
This month at Amberley Care Home, we have been busy celebrating several national days including the National Day of Older People, World Mental Health Day and Heritage Day. We had a great time raising awareness of many causes and opening up conversations for everybody to get involved in.
National Day of Older People
Every year on the 1st of October, people across the world mark the United Nations International Day of Older People to raise awareness of opportunities and challenges faced by the ageing population. Resients play an integral part in strengthening our communities and neighbourhoods; as workers, carers, volunteers, activists and community connectors. But these vital contributions are often overlooked, or limited by ageism and other societal and physical barriers.
As well as helping others, volunteering has been shown to improve our social connections and enhance our sense of purpose and self-esteem. We all have a part to play in making our communities and neighbourhoods better places to age, and in celebrating and enabling the contributions of older people. On this International Day of Older People, we are celebrating each of our residents and the vital part they play, and have the potential to play, in making our community in Greater Manchester a better place to live.
We had a local singer come in to perform for our residents, playing some of their favourite songs from their youth and we also held a group lunch with some delicious foods prepared by our exceptional kitchen team which everybody enjoyed.
National Mental Health Day
On the 10th of October, Amberley commemorated World Mental Health Day. We held walk-in sessions for residents which the team really enjoyed and residents found helpful. We shared lived experiences which were very insightful and motivating for the Amberley team.
This year’s theme set by Amberley Care Home was workplace mental health. The theme highlights the importance of addressing mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, for the benefit of people, organisations, and communities. It also allowed us to highlight to everybody how much mental health matters and release any stigma that may be associated with the topic.
Heritage Day
Heritage Day is on the 19th of October, and we took the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the cultural diversity of Amberley Care Home. In its essence, the day embraces and celebrates the true meaning of why we call ourselves all-inclusive. We marked the day at Amberley by wearing traditional outfits, eating traditional foods, learning about different cultures both inside and outside of our home and spending quality time with friends and family.
Our residents have had a great time this month learning more about each other and sharing many stories from their youths. At Amberley Care Home, we understand the importance of community and ensure our residents continue to live the lives they deserve through our full activities programme and first-class facilities.
