Joan’s Story of Finding Purpose and Belonging at Amberley Care Home

When Joan joined us at Amberley Care Home in December 2023, she was looking for companionship and a place where she could feel truly at home. Following the loss of her husband, who had also lived at Amberley, Joan made the decision to move into our residential community to be surrounded by support and familiarity.
At 88, Joan had lived a full and accomplished life, including a career as a science professor. However, when she first arrived, she was understandably reserved and spent much of her time in her room. Our team took the time to get to know Joan from the moment she moved in, to understand her interests and gently encourage her to become involved in daily life. It was important to us that Joan not only felt supported, but also valued and included as part of our community.
Growing Confidence Through Purpose and Community
As Joan settled into life at Amberley, we quickly learned that the best way to get her involved was by giving her small tasks to complete, as this offered her a sense of purpose. Over time, she flourished with these responsibilities and soon grew into a role that is truly special at our care home in Manchester.
Today, Joan is proudly known as Amberley’s Resident Ambassador. She plays an active role in supporting our activities programme, helping to organise events and welcome visitors. Joan also regularly supports with show rounds, contributes to interviews and helps prepare our home for special occasions.

Our home manager, Tsitsi, said: "Joan is such an amazing resident who has wholeheartedly embraced her role as Amberley’s Ambassador. She is always willing to support others and takes great pride in assisting with events, activities and welcoming visitors into the home. Joan’s positive attitude, kindness and approachable nature make her a valued member of the Amberley community."
Her role has had a transformative impact on her well-being. Joan has grown in confidence, developed strong relationships both in and out of our home and found a renewed sense of purpose. She is a friendly face in our home and is always ready to offer encouragement and support to others.
Abigail Oppong, one of our dedicated nurses, shared: "Jean consistently demonstrates compassion, dignity and respect in everything she does, particularly when representing Amberley at events and funerals. Joan’s involvement has had a positive impact on the atmosphere within the home, helping to create a warm, inclusive and supportive environment for everyone."
Joan herself has also shared just how much this journey has meant to her: “After 2 years and 3 months, I can truly say I have found my happiness. Coming to Amberley Care Home was the right decision for me. At first, when people said, “This is your home,” I was unsure and in two minds about it. But now, I genuinely feel that Amberley is my home. With my family living 250 miles away, it could have felt lonely at times, but instead, I have found comfort, care, and belonging here. I truly feel part of the Amberley family, and that means so much to me.”
